A gimp mask is a close-fitting bondage hood that covers the head. It is worn in BDSM role play to hide the wearer’s identity, signal a submissive role or change how a scene feels. Styles range from open-faced hoods to fully enclosed ones.
Hood styles
- Open-faced: openings for the eyes and mouth; the most approachable first hood
- Mouth-only or eyes-only: more sensory restriction
- Zipped: openings that can be closed during play
- Fully enclosed: for experienced players only
What to compare
Check which openings the hood has and whether nostril holes are included. Look at how it fastens – laces, zip or buckle – because that decides how adjustable it is and how quickly it comes off. Material matters too: leather-look fabrics, leather, latex and spandex differ in stretch, warmth and care.
Using a hood safely
Breathing comes first: never block the nose and mouth openings, and never combine a hood with anything tight around the neck. Do not use one alone, when drunk or drowsy, or while sleeping. Agree a signal that works without words, keep safety scissors within reach and remove the hood at once if the wearer feels dizzy, panicked or short of breath.
